Who Knows Me?

Inside each of us there’s a desire to be known. Some people want to be known for who they are. Others want to be known for what they do. And some people want to be known for what they stand for. We often measure our value by whether or not we feel “known.”

As I’ve considered my own sense of self-worth — in seasons when I feel known by others and also when I feel invisible — I’ve come to the conclusion that the only thing that really matters is that I’m known by God. Popularity is fickle. Relationships change. The things we do are forgotten. But in and through it all, God remains steadfast.

My identity must rest in God; he’s my only constant in a life that’s constantly changing.

Too often, we evaluate our worth based on our occupations, achievements, what others say of us or what we believe others think of us. But God’s Word tells us to maintain a posture of faith that’s rooted in who we are in Christ — regardless of the positions we’re in or the circumstances around us.

In Psalm 139, David points out that God always knows everything about us: what we do, the contributions we make and what we stand for. Even when we feel invisible to those around us, God knows who we are at the core of our being. We are known by him, and he delights in us.

Wanting to be seen and known by others can be important to us. But whether we’re shining in public or feeling small and insignificant, what truly matters is that God knows us. He always sees us. And he loves us. As David reminds us, God’s thoughts about us are precious and “cannot be numbered. … They outnumber the grains of sand” (Psalm 139:17b, 18b, NLT).

You and I are known by God! Live in that reality today.
